Dunno if any of you have run into this but I find that if I try to write music when I'm FIRST awakened prior to caffeine or food but in that sort of state where most of my mind is shut off still from sleep writing is much easier/faster.
Why? That part of my mind that goes "Oh, this could be louder, that part could be softer, this could repeat less etc" gets shut off and I'm just reacting to the way sounds are going together rather than mentally doing a lot of overthinking.
I recently did a "day piece" (37 minute instrumental piece called "Loop4: Easter Sunday") this way over at: http://netnewmusic.ning.com/profile/aliensporebomb if you want to check it out.
And of course, it's even easier, better if everything is set up so you can just start without worrying about logistics of getting everything operating beforehand.
Anyway, try it. I used to do a lot of writing when I was so tired I was on the verge of falling asleep. Now I find out it's actually happier to do it when I'm first awake but not really "conscious" yet. Make sense? |

yes, consciousness would definitely be the enemy. being awake for songwriting is overrated! then theres the other side, sliding down into sleep. or deprived of it. all those different states definitely contribute a sound.
i also had a pretty cool day where i decided to try the opposite of my over-amped norm; by meditating for 3 hours and then seeing what kind of music i wrote (my parents are guru-heads so ive got skillz). i ended up, not surprisingly, writing something fairly spacey and peaceful. it was called "Fairyland Embassy". reminds me to listen to it again.
listening to your day peace. yum yum. speak of the devil, this is sounding pretty spacey and peaceful! its mixing very nicely with my vicodin (tweaked my back, taking it easy). yes indeed, some atmosphere happening here, and developing i see. guitar sounds great. _________________ Nicholas Dobson

i forgot how fun it can be to zone out to an ambient song for a half hour. Origin had a guy who did lengthier ambient things, but hes a beach bum in Indonesia now! ah well _________________ Nicholas Dobson
